Who are the Medway Japan Friendship Association?
The Association was founded in 2006 (originally named the Medway International Relations Japan Group) and is responsible for overseeing cultural ties between Medway and its twinned cities, Ito and Yokosuka.
Over the years, the Association has expanded to about 20 members who take on a variety of roles that include the promotion of cultural, educational and economic links with Medway. The Association regularly meet to organise exchange student trips, social activities, the hosting of visitors, and to discuss fundraising.
The Association has been responsible for the student exchanges for many years. Each summer, four Medway students and four Japanese students take part in an exchange for two weeks in which they experience life and culture of their host towns.
In 2012, the Association helped to organise a formal visit from the Deputy Mayor of Yokosuka, as well as the friendship visit from the Mayor of Ito and his party. They also oversaw a business trip from the Mayor of Hirado. In 2013 an event known as J400 commemorated the start of relations between the UK and Japan which began in 1613. Many events took place throughout the year to celebrate. In the last few years, the Association has also participated in the annual Hanami (flower viewing) festival held at Brogdale Farm in Faversham, Kent where a stall of Japanese items is available.
